Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds
Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: A Guide for Southeast Georgia Couples
One of today’s biggest engagement-ring questions is whether to choose a natural or lab-grown diamond. Both are real diamonds and both can be beautiful, but there are important differences in origin, price, rarity, and long-term value.
At Crawford’s Jewelers, we believe the right choice is the one that fits your priorities and budget. Here’s what couples throughout Southeast Georgia should know.
What Is a Natural Diamond?
A natural diamond forms deep within the earth under tremendous heat and pressure over billions of years before being mined, cut, polished, and graded.
Their natural origin and limited supply give natural diamonds a rarity that many couples find meaningful.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is created using technology that recreates the conditions under which natural diamonds form.
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same basic chemical composition and crystal structure as natural diamonds. They are not imitations such as cubic zirconia or moissanite and are graded for the same characteristics.
Can You See a Difference?
In most cases, you cannot tell a natural diamond from a lab-grown diamond by sight. Both have the brilliance and durability people expect from a diamond. Specialized testing is generally needed to reliably determine their origin.
Regardless of origin, shoppers should consider the traditional Four Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Cut is especially important because it has a major effect on how lively and brilliant a diamond appears.
How Do Prices Compare?
Lab-grown diamonds generally cost less than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality. That can allow a larger center stone or higher grades within the same budget.
Natural diamonds usually cost more because of their rarity. Some couples prefer a smaller natural diamond for its origin, while others prefer the larger look a lab-grown diamond can provide.
There is no “correct” amount to spend. Your engagement-ring budget should fit your financial comfort and priorities.
What About Rarity and Long-Term Value?
Natural diamonds are finite, while lab-grown diamonds can be produced as technology allows. That difference affects pricing and long-term market behavior.
Natural diamonds generally have a more established resale market. Lab-grown diamond prices have changed considerably as production has expanded, so buyers should not assume a lab-grown stone will retain its original retail price.
Natural diamonds purchased at Crawford’s Jewelers also have another advantage: our natural diamond upgrade policy. When you are ready to upgrade, purchase a new natural diamond ring for at least twice your original purchase price and we will give you the full original purchase price toward the new ring. For example, if you purchase a natural diamond engagement ring for $3,000 and later upgrade to a $6,000 ring, your original $3,000 is applied toward the new purchase. Whether that upgrade happens next year or 10 years from now, it gives you the opportunity to let your diamond grow along with life’s milestones.
An engagement ring should not be viewed primarily as a financial investment, but future value and upgrade options can matter. If those priorities are important to you, discuss them with your jeweler before purchasing.
Why Couples Choose Natural Diamonds
A natural diamond may be right for you if:
- You value its natural origin and history.
- Rarity is part of what makes the ring meaningful to you.
- You prefer the more established market history of natural diamonds.
- You appreciate the tradition of a naturally formed diamond engagement ring.
Why Couples Choose Lab-Grown Diamonds
A lab-grown diamond may be right for you if:
- You want a larger diamond within a particular budget.
- You want to prioritize higher color or clarity grades for the money.
- You like the technology behind lab-grown diamonds.
- Appearance and immediate value matter more to you than natural rarity or potential resale value.
How to Choose Without Going Over Budget
Start by deciding what matters most: size, sparkle, shape, natural rarity, or a firm price range.
A knowledgeable jeweler can help balance the Four Cs without paying for grades that may not make a visible difference. Halos, solitaires, three-stone rings, antique-inspired styles, and custom settings also create different looks and price points.
Why Compare Both Options in Person?
Online photos and grading reports are helpful, but they cannot completely show how a diamond looks on your hand. Diamonds with similar grades can still look different in person.
Seeing both options side by side lets you compare appearance, size, and price. A local jeweler also gives you someone nearby for sizing, cleaning, inspections, repairs, and questions after the purchase.
